Hi guys, welcome to our monthly newsletter. The club continues to go from strength to strength, so let’s look at what’s been happening…

On Sunday the 9th of September, Dan Strauss (also known as ‘The Raspberry Ape’) will be on the mats at Gracie Barra Yeovil as part of his 2017 ‘Butterfly Guard Tour’.

Dan is a Black Belt under Roger Gracie. He is a British and English champion at black belt, NAGA elite European champion and a number one ranked black belt by the UKBJJA.

He’s been invited to and competed in the world’s biggest submission grappling tournaments such as Polaris pro, ADCC and the Eddie Bravo Invitational.

This seminar will be a ‘Pre Book Only’ event and the cut off date is the 31st of August. You will not be able to sign up on the day or after the 31st of August.

‘Early Sign Up’ entry to this seminar is £35 up until the 31st of July. After this date, entry will be £40.

Please remember that we do have a limited amount of mat space and will only be able to cater for a certain number of people. To avoid missing out, get yourself booked onto the seminar as soon as possible.

Dan has visited us at Gracie Barra before and everyone had a blast as you can see from the photo below.

With the ever increasing popularity of the Gracie Barra Future Champions programme and the rapidly expanding adults Fundamentals programme we have now added a bridge between the two.

This provides an excellent opportunity for youngters to try out our fantastic sport.

A few great reasons teens should get started in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu:

  • Provides a positive outlet for the stresses and pressures of modern life and school work
  • Increases problem solving abilities particularly under pressure
  • Provides a physical challenge, getting youngsters off the couch and away from the Playstation and Xbox
  • Helps promote a healthy lifestyle and body image
  • Increases focus
  • Helps to build confidence
  • Develop social skills, friendships and co-operation working with their new teammates at Gracie Barra Yeovil
  • It forms a great activity for parents and adolescents to train together!

Our new Juniors & Teens Class will run at Yeovil College Sports Hall, every Wednesday 5:45-6:45PM and we are currently offering a FREE junior and teens session for just 10 people. Some of these spots are already gone so be quick and check the link here to claim yours!

To kick start our new teens and juniors BJJ programme we will hosting a FREE anti-bullying workshop on

Saturday 20th May

12:00 – 2:00pm

This workshop will help educate adolescents about how to avoid being bullied as well as some simple and effective techniques that may help your son / daughter / niece or nephew if confronted with a difficult situation.

Not only does Jiu Jitsu make us better fighters, it makes us better people, it improves our relationships with others, it builds friendships and community. In short, if everyone in the world trained Jiu-Jitsu, the world would be a better place.

With this in mind, throughout all of May we are running a Referral Programme. So you can bring along anybody – your boyfriend, your girlfriend, wife, husband, brother, sister, old friend, new friend, work mate, random stranger, WHOEVER!

If that person signs up during, or after, their two week free trial you will be eligible for £25 CASH or a free private training session with myself – worth £30 but actually priceless.

Remember though: this offer only lasts for May and newcomers are entitled to two weeks free. So start enrolling your buddies early!

April saw Head Coach professor Salvatore Pace visit us for an awesome seminar focusing on the brutal omoplata shoulder lock.

It was great to see so many students on the mat taking up the opportunity to learn from a black belt. I’m sure that everyone who attended managed to take home some new details and concepts that will help in their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu game.

The seminar concluded with numerous students being awarded promotions in the form of stripes on their belts. Perhaps the highlight though was seeing four students who have trained consistently at Gracie Barra Yeovil over the past two years being awarded their blue belts. Massive congratulations to Dan, James, Josh and Sean who have all worked really hard and fully deserve their promotions – next stop: purple belt!

If you’re reading this and considering taking up a sport where you can make progress and build achievements like these guys, reach out to us and book your two week free trial (see right)!

That’s it for now, I look forward to seeing you all on the mats in May.
