Welcome to the Gracie Barra Yeovil newsletter, your monthly update on what’s been happening at the club and what you can look forward to over the coming weeks. So here we go….

Bournemouth Open Competition Results

The team had a great day at the Bournemouth Open on June 10th. We had four members of the Gracie Barra Yeovil team enter. Between them they brought back two gold and one bronze medal. This is even more impressive when we consider that two of our competitors have been training less than three months!

I was really impressed with the amount of heart the team showed and I hope to continue seeing that effort both on the mats and in competition. Results like this just prove what a great team we have that all support and encourage one another.

Keep up the good work team!

Next Competition Dates

If you are considering competing I would strongly recommend that you try it.

Now, obviously people are nervous about putting their Jiu-Jitsu skills to the test and that’s normal but having said that, the pressure that competition brings can often result in a greater focus on your training.

You will find that you start training with a lot more intensity. It helps you learn to use your Jiu-Jitsu under pressure (which is great if you are training for self-defence purposes) and it brings the whole club and community closer together. All of these aspects combine to accelerate your progress in BJJ.

Don’t worry about “losing” either as it doesn’t really matter. As the saying goes in Jiu-Jitsu; you either win or you learn! As you know, we don’t hold gradings in this Martial Art but competing is the best way to test your skills against other practitioners and is a much better test than any form of ‘grading’ that other Martial Arts carry out. If you’re not sure whether you are ready come and speak to me and I’ll be happy to give you my opinion.

With all that said I’d like to invite the whole team to enter the Dorset and Hants BJJ Open on Saturday 30th September 2017 at Bournemouth Littledown Centre. Early bird discount for entering is £30 until the 25th June (for either gi or nogi).

If you can’t make that one there is also The Newquay Open on 9th September 2017 in Cornwall. Registration for this is £29 for either gi or nogi or £48 to do both. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend / coach at this event.

It would be great to see as many members of the team competing at these events as possible!

Don’t forget guys, next Saturday (15th July) we will be holding our first ever (possibly inaugural) Gracie Barra Yeovil Barbeque at Ham Hill Country Park.

This will be an awesome opportunity for everyone to meet up socially, have a drink and a burger (or veggieburger). If anyone can source some acaii(!) bring it along as we all know this improves your BJJ by 1000%

We’ll be bringing some mats too so we can have a roll as well. Families and partners are welcome too. Mike is promising to DJ and Phil is threatening to do some rapping so it should be excellent!

If you’d like to come along leave a comment on the Facebook event page here and comment if you’re bringing families or partners. Bring a contribution to training during the next week which you can leave with me (we’re suggesting £10) and we’ll get supplies for everyone before the event.

I don’t want to say too much at the moment, but there is progress being made on the new gym. Keep your eyes out in the coming weeks as we look at fund raising opportunities that will enable us to buy some excellent new mats.

Note: This is Gracie Barra Birmingham. Actual new gym may look nothing like this!

Last Chance!

Just a reminder that on Sunday the 9th of September, Dan Strauss (also known as ‘The Raspberry Ape’) will be on the mats at Gracie Barra Yeovil as part of his 2017 ‘Butterfly Guard Tour’.

Dan is a Black Belt under Roger Gracie. He is a British and English champion at black belt, NAGA elite European champion and a number one ranked black belt by the UKBJJA.

He’s been invited to and competed in the world’s biggest submission grappling tournaments such as Polaris pro, ADCC and the Eddie Bravo Invitational.

This seminar will be a ‘Pre Book Only’ event and the cut off date is the 31st of August. You will not be able to sign up on the day or after the 31st of August.

‘Early Sign Up’ entry to this seminar is £35 up until the END OF THIS MONTH. After this date, entry will be £40.

Please remember that we do have a limited amount of mat space and will only be able to cater for a certain number of people. To avoid missing out, get yourself booked onto the seminar as soon as possible.

Dan has visited us at Gracie Barra before and everyone had a blast as you can see from the photo below.

For more info see the Gracie Barra Yeovil Facebook page.

That’s it for now. I look forward to seeing you all on the mats in July!
